The OABO conference offers a great opportunity to all basketball officials.  Officials will get up to speed on rules changes and points of emphasis, while interacting with fellow officials from throughout the Province.  There will be opportunities to hear from top ranked officials and others on how to perform under pressure, and to get the latest from the CEO of Basketball Canada on where they are going.

Honorary OVBABO Member, Al Rae has passed away

It is with great sadness that the Executive informs you of the passing of Honorary OVBABO Member, Al Rae (December 26, 1932 – August 20, 2016).

Below is a brief bio of Al’s impressive basketball officiating career and his contribution to basketball in Ottawa, within Canada and internationally.

Al was not only a Honorary member of the Ottawa Board but also of OABO and CABO.

Al’s refereeing career included his refereeing in the 1964,1968,1972 1976 Olympic games as well as many European championships, the Pan Am games and numerous Canadian and CIS National Championships.

Al was head of the FIBA Technical Commission and writer of many of the technical manuals used by officials worldwide. He was the CABO national interpreter from 1973 -1991.

In 2000 Al was inducted into the Canadian basketball Hall of Fame. He was also in the Manitoba and Ottawa Sports Halls of Fame.

He has received Lifetime Achievement Awards from the Coaching Association of Canada in 2002 and the City of Ottawa Sports Awards in 2006 and 2007.

While officiating at the highest level of play he was also an active board member in Ottawa providing mentoring to inexperienced officials over his time on the court.

A funeral service will be held in the Sacred Space of the Beechwood National Cemetery, 280 Beechwood Avenue, Ottawa (East of the Vanier Parkway) on Wednesday August 31, 2016 at 11 a.m. followed by interment in the R.C.M.P. National Memorial Cemetery.
